I’m sorry for denigrating Nkrumah — Matthew Opoku Prempeh apologises

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) running mate, has expressed regret for remarks he made regarding Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh, commonly referred to by his stage as NAPO, issued a succinct statement stating that his remarks were his own and were not meant to belittle Kwame Nkrumah or any other former president.

The apology was given a few days after he asserted during his unveiling in Kumasi that President Akufo-Addo had outperformed all previous presidents of Ghana, including the late President Nkrumah.

Most members of the public reacted strongly to his remarks, with some calling for an apology and retraction.

Nonetheless, the NPP running mate issued an apology in a statement for his remarks.

“I wish to emphasize that I never meant to disrespect our former president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, or any of our former heads of state; including my grand uncle and mentor, John Agyekum Kufuor,” he stated.

“I note the concerns raised after my statement, I apologize sincerely and regret any discomfort caused,” he stated.
