Jordan Ayew named captain for Ghana’s final AFCON Qualifiers

Head Coach of Ghana, Otto Addo has named Jordan Ayew as captain for the final round of African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Angola and Niger.

This decision comes after Otto Addo faced stern criticism for overlooking Ayew and naming Mohammed Kudus as captain in the previous international break.

Otto Addo has confirmed that Ayew will lead the team in the upcoming games, with Alexander Djiku and Mohammed Kudus serving as deputy captains. He emphasized that Kudus needs to “learn and grow” and that Ayew will take over as captain from now on.

“I talked to [Mohammed] Kudus for him to understand that for me he just needs to learn and grow. I want him to remain the second captain alongside [Alexander] Djiku, but Jordan will take over from now,” Coach Addo explained while announcing his squad for the final two AFCON qualifiers.

Ghana needs a miracle to qualify for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, as they are currently in third place in Group F, with just 2 points from 4 games. They are 10 points behind Angola and 5 points behind Sudan.

To secure a spot at the 2025 tournament in Morocco, the team must win their remaining matches and hope that Sudan falters.
