Koforidua High Court issues bench warrant for Akwatia MP’s arrest

The High Court in Koforidua has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Ernest Yaw Kumi, Member of Parliament for Akwatia, after finding him guilty of contempt of court.

The court’s decision stems from Kumi’s defiance of an interim injunction, which barred him from being sworn in as a legislator.

Despite the court’s directive to refrain from assuming the parliamentary role until a legal dispute was resolved, Ernest Kumi took the oath of office in Parliament on January 7, 2025.

Presiding Judge Justice Senyo Amedahe issued the bench warrant after Ernest Kumi failed to appear for sentencing.

The court had earlier granted an injunction request filed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate, Henry Boakye Yiadom, against the Electoral Commission (EC), Ernest Kumi, and the Clerk of Parliament, halting Kumi’s swearing-in ceremony.
