Ghana Water Limited (GWL) in the Ashanti Region is closing the Barekese Water Treatment Plant, which will result in a temporary water shortage for residents of Kumasi and the surrounding areas beginning Monday, March 17, 2025.
GWL management stated in a press release that the shutdown is required to make it easier to install new foot valves and interconnection pipelines at the Suame Roundabout. The anticipated three-day procedure is a component of continuous efforts to improve the city’s water supply.
The entire city of Kumasi, Offinso, and the surrounding communities will be impacted by the brief stop in water distribution. It is recommended that residents look for alternate sources of water for their everyday requirements.
“We urge all affected communities to bear with us during this period,” the statement read.
Hospitals, schools, and other vital service providers in the affected areas have also been urged to stockpile enough water to keep them operational during the shutdown.
“This initiative aligns with GWL’s commitment to improving the water supply capacity from the Barekese Water Treatment Plant, ensuring better service delivery and addressing supply challenges in the metropolis,” the statement added.
