Mr. Kwame Ntow Amoah, a senior management employee of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), has taken over as the company’s new leader.
The redeployment of Mr. Edward Abambire Bawa to Ghana Oil Company (GOIL) as Managing Director and Group CEO results in Mr. Amoah taking over as Acting Chief Executive Officer.
The new CEO of GNPC has held important leadership positions throughout his career, including Deputy Chief Executive at GNPC and Advisor to the Minister of Energy/Director of Petroleum at the Ministry of Energy.
The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation Act, 1983 (PNDCL 64) and the Petroleum (Exploration and Production) Act, 2016 (Act 919) control the commercial operations of GNPC, a statutory corporation. The company’s goal is to become a major worldwide oil and gas business whose activities significantly improve people’s quality of life.
In order to further the nation’s and the industry’s progress, Mr. Amoah has also held the positions of chairman and member of numerous national, international, and industry boards and committees.
He has been crucial in instances affecting Ghana’s petroleum industry that have gone to international arbitration. A technical advisor for the nation’s Maritime Boundary Case, which Ghana won on September 23, 2017, is one of his contributions.
Through his efforts, GNPC and the nation have been able to secure substantial investments, savings, and funding. He established Ghana’s upstream oil and gas industry, brought in investments that resulted in exploration achievements, and established Ghana as a West African province that produces commercial oil.
Mr. Amoah also played a key role in obtaining almost US$7 billion in funding for the Sankofa Oil and Gas Development Project, which was supported by US$700 million in World Bank partial risk guarantees.
He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) in Economics and Statistics from the University of Ghana and an MBA from IMD, Switzerland. He has also taken part in specialist courses in energy and petroleum management, as well as a number of international leadership and management training programs.
“GNPC extends its heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Amoah on his appointment and looks forward to his leadership in advancing the Corporation’s strategic vision. We are confident his expertise and dedication will drive GNPC’s continued growth and success,” the company said in a press release.
Players in the industry have also praised the new CEO’s choice, pointing out his extensive experience in the petroleum industry.
Some industry insiders claim that Mr. Amoah is not only assuming the national oil company’s leadership role but also acting as a strategic asset to strengthen the company’s standing.
They have encouraged him to support local content, encourage more local involvement in the business, and defend and protect the nation’s interests.
