Joseph Osei Owusu, the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, has firmly endorsed Alexander Afenyo-Markin to be the Minority Leader of the incoming 9th Parliament.
Speaking on the subject, the Bekwai MP urged the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to give top priority to Afenyo-Markin’s remarkable command of parliamentary processes and his in-depth familiarity with the dynamics of leadership in the House.
Osei Owusu underlined that the Effutu MP’s background and knowledge would be crucial in promoting a cohesive and calculated strategy to oppose the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) expected resounding majority in Parliament.
“I strongly believe in longevity and experience from our own actions and inactions. You can tell that when Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu was the Minority Leader and Majority Leader, he stood out very clearly. But it did not happen by accident.
“He started as a Chief Whip and grew up to become a leader. The longevity brings experience and clarity so I would not support any request for a new person to be brought into the picture now. If you ask me, let Alexander Afenyo-Markin continue.”
After losing their majority in the December 7 elections, NPP members will be on the minority side of the House when the 9th Parliament is sworn in on January 6, 2025.
