The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has identified indiscriminate littering of refuse as a major contributor to the high cost of water production in Ghana.
According to Stanley Martey, Communications Director of the GWCL, poor sanitation and littering have a major impact on the country’s water bodies.
In an interview with Original News, Stanley Martey explained that when refuse is littered around indiscriminately or the environment is polluted, it often finds its way into water bodies, necessitating the use of more chemicals for water treatment. This, in turn, increases the cost of water production.
“The cost of water production is high because of the amount of chemicals we need to use to treat the water,” Martey said.
“If we can reduce the amount of pollutants in our water bodies, we can reduce the cost of water production.”
Stanley Martey emphasized the need for Ghanaians to take measures to protect the country’s water bodies.
He advocated for proper waste disposal, avoidance of littering, and preservation of natural habitats.
