Mahama and NDC must be held accountable for Obuasi deaths — Ahiagbah

Richard Ahiagbah, the director of communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has urged Ghanaians to hold the John Mahama Administration and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) accountable for the deadly event at the AngloGold Ashanti Ghana Obuasi Mine, where seven people were killed in a clash between security forces and illegal miners.

Mr. Ahiagbah ascribed this occurrence to the Mahama administration’s failure to warn, counsel, or educate the NDC members who have taken matters into their own hands and assaulted institutions while claiming that their government is in control.

He stated in a post on his X page “”Yesterday, 19th January 2025, was a Black Sunday in H.E. John Mahama’s Ghana. It has taken me a lot to wrap my mind around the needless killing of eight or more Ghanaians in Obuasi.m My condolences to the families, friends, and the larger Obuasi and Ashanti Region. We share in your pain and trauma. Ghanaians must hold the NDC and the John Mahama Administration responsible for the murder of these eight Ghanaians owing to their inaction to inform, caution, or advise the members of the NDC who have taken the laws into their own hands and storming institutions under the guise that it is their government that is in power.

“Just 12 days in office, 8 avoidable slaughters simply because the NDC refused to heed the call to bring their rampaging members to order. Now, these precious lives are gone forever due to that negligence. No extent of investigation will bring them back to life. Well, let’s console one another as we await the outcome of the requested investigation to see if these Ghanaians murdered in cold blood will see justice… We must pray for justice for the Obuasi 8.. Rest in peace, my fellow Ghanaians.”

President John Dramani Mahama has also expressed concern over the incident and has called for an immediate investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.

In a directive, the President tasked the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the Ministry of Interior to collaborate with AngloGold Ashanti and local authorities to deliver a comprehensive report.
