The Second Deputy Majority Chief Whip, Alex Tetteh Djornobuah, has formally requested an emergency meeting of Parliament, citing “matters of utmost national importance”.
This request, made on behalf of the Majority Caucus, is grounded in Article 112(3) of the 1992 Constitution and Standing Order 53 of the Parliament of Ghana.
The request highlights several pressing issues requiring Parliament’s attention, including tax exemptions for beneficiaries under the One District, One Factory Programme, the Ghana Financial Stability Fund, a $250 million facility from the International Development Association, and six critical bills, such as the Environmental Protection Agency Bill, 2024, and the Social Protection Bill, 2023.
According to the request, Parliament’s adjournment sine die on October 22, 2024, without explanation, necessitates this emergency meeting.
The Majority Caucus emphasizes that the requested meeting is in “utmost good faith and in the national interest” to enable the Government to fulfill its constitutional obligations.
The Caucus urges the Speaker to summon Parliament within the stipulated seven-day period, citing constitutional and statutory provisions.
“We stand ready to provide any additional information or clarification that may be required and look forward to your favourable consideration of this request,” the request states.
