Minister of Youth and Sports Mustapha Ussif has firmly rejected accusations labelling him as the “worst Sports Minister” during a session with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports, Culture, and Tourism, chaired by Wisdom Kobena Woyome.
The meeting addressed several key issues, including Ghana’s controversial $3 million expenditure during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where the Black Stars were eliminated in the group stage.
Ussif has come under heavy criticism following the Black Stars’ early exits from both the 2021 and 2023 AFCON tournaments, as well as the recent ban of the Baba Yara Stadium by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) due to poor pitch conditions.
However, the Sports Minister pushed back against the negative portrayal of his tenure.
“I disagree with the statement that I am the worst as a Minister. In terms of numbers, I don’t know which numbers you’re referring to, so you should be able to tell me what data you are using to determine that during my time, it is the worst,” Ussif said,
Ussif’s comments come amidst increasing public dissatisfaction with the state of Ghanaian football and sports infrastructure, highlighted by the Baba Yara Stadium ban.
Despite the criticism, the Minister remains defiant, challenging the validity of the accusations and emphasising the lack of concrete data to support such claims of poor performance.
