The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Minority in Parliament has expressed concern over the challenges faced by Ghanaian students on government scholarships abroad.
Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, Deputy Ranking Member on the Education Committee of Parliament said these students are facing dire circumstances due to the government’s failure to honor its obligations, leading to personal and national humiliation.
“The failure of the Akufo Addo/Bawumia led NPP government to honour its basic obligations to our students has not only put the future of students in jeopardy but has also cast our dear nation in a bad light,” the Minority stated.
The students, numbering 927, pursuing postgraduate degrees in prestigious institutions in the United Kingdom, are struggling to survive due to unpaid tuition fees and stipends.
Some students have been withdrawn from their courses, while others face potential deportation. Worse still, PhD students who enrolled in September/October 2021 have not received stipends for 27 months, forcing them into dehumanizing situations.
The Minority is demanding immediate payment of tuition fees and stipends and renegotiation of Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with foreign universities.
“We stand with the students and their families, and we will continue to use all available avenues to hold this government accountable,” he said.
The Minority vowed to ensure that the next NDC government introduces legislation for transparent and streamlined scholarship administration.
