Next NPP govt will make Ghana a pharmaceutical hub – Bawumia

Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has said that his government if voted into office, will support local pharmaceutical manufacturers to make Ghana an enviable pharmaceutical hub.

In an engagement with members of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana and its allied organizations, in Accra, the Vice President said in his quest to make Ghana a pharmaceutical hub, there would be holistic support and some tax exemptions for local manufacturers to produce medication in abundance as there is a high demand for it.

“If we want to be the pharmaceutical hub which I want us to be, then we have to put our money where our mouth is, to support local manufacturing, without that support, we are not going to make it. The good thing about the pharmaceutical industry is that the demand for the products are there, 70% of needs are imported, so funding this is not something you’re going to fund and then you are losing money.” says Dr. Bawumia

The New Patriotic Party flagbearer pledged to go all out to support the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana financially for actualization.

“We cannot do it without funding, it’s the same way I want to develop a minerals bank for the miners because we can be, a major mining hub, especially for the small-scale miners with some support but we need some financial institution that understands the business………… I believe that once we have made the decision which I have made, that we are going to make Ghana a hub for manufacturing in this sub-region then we have to support it with the financial resources”

The Vice President was speaking at an engagement with members of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana and its allied organizations as part of his “Bold Solutions for the Future Engagements” with key industry players.

This engagement was to enable him listen to the concerns of the society and incorporate them in his manifesto and also dialogue the appropriate approach.
