NHIS announces free dialysis for kidney patients

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has announced that, starting on June 1 and ending in December 2024, individuals with renal disorders who are under the age of 18 and over 60 would be eligible for free monthly dialysis treatments through the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIS) was given GHC6.87 billion by Parliament in March to cover health insurance claims and other expenses for the year.

As part of the 2024 distribution formula, this decision includes emergency funding for dialysis patients in need for the first time.

Amounts totaling around GHC2 million have been set aside for kidney patients receiving dialysis in some public health facilities.

According to a statement from the National Health Insurance Authority, the program was a part of the organization’s 20th anniversary celebration.

“As part of NHIA’s 20th anniversary, the NHIA, through administrative arrangements has allocated an additional GHC 400,000.00, under the corporate social responsibility approved budget of the scheme to support this initiative,” the statement said.

“Patients aged under 18 and above 60 years will receive all eight free dialysis sessions per month under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) from June to December 2024.”

“The cost of dialysis for this treatment category is projected to be GHC144,354 per month and by the end of December 2024, the cumulative cost is estimated to be approximately GHC1.01 million,” it added.
