No more hiding money spent on sports; GFA needs to answer for its actions – Mahama

Ghana’s sports industry is in serious decline, and the country’s football management is a major cause for concern given its dismal results in international tournaments.

President John Dramani Mahama has promised to increase transparency in the sector’s management, especially in the way national teams are financially managed.

“There will be no secrecy in how much the government spends on the national teams; I have directed that the GFA be held accountable,” Mahama stated in his State of the Nation Address on Thursday, February 27, 2025.

Following a string of subpar performances by the national teams, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has drawn harsh criticism. The inability of Ghana’s senior national football team, the Black Stars, to advance to the upcoming AFCON exacerbated resentment among supporters and interested parties.

In light of mounting worries about poor administration and a lack of accountability, Mahama reiterated his resolve to modernize the industry and guarantee that money given to sports is used appropriately.

Government is committed to refurbishing existing sports stadia and building more youth resource centres,” he stated, emphasizing the need to develop local talent and restore Ghana’s reputation in sports.
