NPP NEC to convene on January 2 after election disaster

The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Executive Council (NEC) will meet on January 2, 2025, to discuss a number of important issues following the general elections in 2024.

The first official meeting of the NEC after the party suffered a crushing setback in the general elections on December 7 will take place at the party’s headquarters in Accra.

The party’s adjustment to its new status as the parliamentary minority has prompted intensive reflection and strategic planning in response to the election results.

According to party sources, the leadership structure of the minority front in the 9th Parliament is one of the main topics on the agenda for the next meeting.

This topic has generated a lot of debate among party members, with varying views on how to proceed as the NPP negotiates its new parliamentary role.
The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament and current Member of Parliament for Bekwai, Joseph Osei Owusu, is one of the numerous voices weighing in on the discussion.

Along with other party leaders, Osei Owusu has been a staunch supporter of keeping Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the current Majority Leader, in a leadership position.

Many think that Afenyo-Markin is the best person to lead the NPP as the Minority Leader in the upcoming Parliament because of his background, political savvy, and capacity to promote unity within the party.

The choice regarding the minority leadership is anticipated to be controversial because it has a lot of ramifications for the party’s capacity to appear powerful, unified, and influential in the 9th Parliament.

The NEC is expected to consider other urgent issues, including the causes of the party’s election loss, the restructuring of party structures, and methods for reestablishing a connection with the grassroots base, in addition to parliamentary leadership.
