President John Dramani Mahama has ordered an immediate investigation into the violent clash at a mining site in Obuasi, which resulted in the tragic loss of up to eight lives, believed to be those of illegal miners.
The investigation aims to “determine the circumstances surrounding the clashes and ensure that any individuals found to have acted unlawfully are brought to justice.”
In a statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Ag. Spokesperson to the President issued on Sunday, January 19, the presidency expressed deep regret over the incident.
In addition to the investigation, President Mahama has instructed the management of AngloGold Ashanti to bear the full medical expenses of the injured individuals and facilitate burial arrangements for those who lost their lives.
The security agencies have also been tasked with taking prompt action to restore peace in the area and implement measures to prevent similar occurrences.
