Oliver Barker-Vormawor granted bail

Oliver Barker-Vormawor, Democracy Hub leader and organizer of the recent #StopGalamsey protest, has secured bail.

The Accra High Court set the bail at 20,000 Ghana cedis with two sureties, requiring bi-weekly police station check-ins.

Background

Barker-Vormawor’s arrest stemmed from the September 21-22 protests at the 37 Hospital Intersection, which aimed to raise awareness about galamsey’s negative impact.

He, along with 53 others, faces charges of unlawful assembly, unlawful damage, assaulting a public officer and conduct conducive to breaching peace

Initially, Justice Comfort Tasiame denied bail on October 8, citing further investigation needs and public unrest concerns. However, the court has now reconsidered.
