Organised Labour Galamsey strike: GMA orders members to provide full services

In spite of the proposed nationwide industrial action declared by Organised Labour, which is scheduled to start on Thursday, October 10, 2024, the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has urged its members to “continue providing full services without interruptions”.

GMA President Dr. Frank Serebour provided clarification in a statement on Tuesday, “The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has not declared a roadmap for industrial action. Therefore, all members are expected to continue providing full services without interruptions.”

In addition, he stated that the GMA supports Organized Labor’s fight against illegal mining, or “galamsey,” but stressed that the GMA will not be participating in the strike just yet.

“The GMA, however, is in solidarity with Organised Labour in this fight against galamsey. The National Executive Council (NEC) will provide further information when necessary,” Dr. Serebour added.

The decision by Organised Labour to carry out the strike in spite of continuing talks and initiatives to solve the issue of illegal mining caught the government off guard on Monday.
