The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has called for a paradigm shift in the Ashanti Region’s approach to development, urging a shift away from political reliance and toward a social contract model.
During a meeting with the World Bank Vice President for Western and Central Africa, the Asantehene emphasized the need for strong infrastructure as a foundation for long-term progress.
“In terms of development, if we have the infrastructure, everything will be fine,” Otumfuo Osei Tutu II stated, highlighting the critical role of foundational structures in fostering growth.
“I cannot depend on the politicians for my development.
I don’t want to depend on them, so let’s have a social contract, and then we do it,” he said.
His remarks emphasize the importance of communities, private entities, and international partners working together and taking proactive steps to address developmental challenges, in addition to government institutions’ efforts.
The Asantehene’s remarks have sparked debate about the potential of community-led initiatives and public-private partnerships to accelerate development in the Ashanti Region.
