Some Ghanaians express disappointment over lifting of MPs’ suspension

A section of Ghanaians have expressed dissatisfaction with the decision to lift the suspension of four Members of Parliament (MPs) who were sanctioned by Speaker Alban Bagbin.

Many Ghanaians who called into Adwenekasa on Original TV/FM programme registered their discontent, arguing that the lifting of the suspension undermines the authority of the Speaker and the rules of the House. Others felt that the decision sends the wrong signal, implying that MPs can act with impunity without facing consequences.

The four MPs were suspended for their alleged unruly behavior during parliamentary proceedings.

According to concerned Ghanaians, the suspension of the four Members of Parliament should have been allowed to proceed as intended, given the questionable behaviour of some MPs.

They told Kwaku Owusu Adjei, the host of the show that, some parliamentarians must show decorum, respect, patriotism and display emotional intelligence in all their dealings

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin lifted the suspension order placed on four Members of Parliament, namely Frank Annoh Dompreh, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, and Alhassan Tampuli, following a brawl that occurred at the Appointments Committee.

The Speaker initially found the actions of the suspended MPs disorderly and dishonorable, leading to their suspension from parliamentary sittings for two weeks.

However, the Minority in Parliament raised concerns and protested the decision, arguing that the Speaker was overstepping his powers.

Some Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) also joined calls for the Speaker to reconsider his decision.

During parliamentary proceedings on Tuesday, February 4, after listening to both sides of the house, Speaker Bagbin agreed to lift the suspension order and made an official statement announcing the decision.

This means that the four MPs can now resume their parliamentary duties, including their roles as Members of the Appointments Committee.
