Four members of parliament who choose to run as independent candidates in the general elections scheduled for December 7 will be decided today by Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin.
This follows a request for two days to consider a resolution submitted by Tamale South MP Haruna Iddrisu, who wants the four MPs’ seats to be declared vacant.
Among these MPs is Andrew Asiamah Amoako, the Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament and the MP for Fomena. Iddrisu claims that after serving as an independent MP in the past, Amoako has now filed to run in the 2024 election on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Other MPs facing difficulties include Peter Kwakye-Ackah, the Member of Parliament for Amenfi Central, and Cynthia Mamle Morrison of Agona East and Kwadwo Asante of Suhum, who are both now serving in Parliament under the NPP but are now seeking to run as independents in the 2024 elections.
A member of Parliament must resign their seat if they quit the party they were elected with to become independent or if an independent member joins a political party, according to Article 97 of the 1992 Constitution, which served as the foundation for Haruna Iddrisu’s motion.
