President Akufo-Addo has sent Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo a petition asking for the removal of Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng.
Mr. Agyebeng’s removal from office is demanded in a petition filed by former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu to President Akufo-Addo.
The petition, dated April 30, 2024, accuses Mr. Agyebeng of misbehavior involving judges and the administration of justice and claims that there were procurement violations in the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s (OSP) vehicle purchases.
In his petition, Mr. Amidu alleges that the OSP has improperly appointed individuals, violated his right to information, and violated his citizens’ rights through arrests and detentions.
The impeachment procedure seems to be connected to Mr. Agyebeng’s contentious press conference, where he asserted that judges were plotting against him.
According to Mr. Amidu, these comments denigrate the judiciary and amount to abuse of judges.
This comes after rumors circulated that Mr. Agyebeng was displeased with his position and resisted calls to step down, opting instead to address a press conference.
Furthermore, Mr. Amidu claims that by making arrests, the Special Prosecutor violated the rights of people like Prof. Frimpong Boateng and Cecilia Dapaah.
