Former President John Dramani Mahama has accused the current administration led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of engaging in a deliberate destruction of the Ghanaian economy.
The NDC flagbearer said the “criminal supervision of the destruction of the economy” was led by the former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, who was motivated by the commissions his firm, Data Bank, got on loans he took on behalf of the country.
Addressing the Western Regional House of Chiefs on Monday on his campaign of the region, Mr Mahama said a future NDC government would return the economy to pre Akufo-Addo government days.
“There’s a lot of hard work ahead of us. It is not going to be easy but we in the NDC have the requisite personnel to turn things around,” he assured.
The destruction of the economy, occasioned by unbridled borrowing, the former president noted has led to untold hardships with the region not exempted.
In his view, the mismanagement of the economy is what has led to the stalling of some major projects in the region like market circle, and the PTC interchange amongst others.
The Western Region, John Mahama noted contributes substantially to the national kitty and would be given a fair share of development.
He cited the cocoa, gold, oil and gas and oil palm sectors as the backbone of the economy with the region a leader in all of them.
“The cocoa industry is non performing because the incentives we have the farmers have been withdrawn. The oil sector has declined by 35 per cent because there are underhand dealings involving the president’s relatives and because of that the investors in the sector have pulled out of Ghana,” he alleged.
In this regard, Mr Mahama said if he wins the December 7 elections, will reengage oil investors to return to Ghana and revamp the cocoa sector by reintroducing the incentives.
“This government has been very irresponsible. They have only been concerned about their well-being and not that of Ghanaians,” he stated.
The meeting offered the Chiefs and Queens of the region the opportunity to put before the former president their frustrations and expectations of a future Mahama government.
Chairman of the occasion and the Omanhene of Esikado, Nana Kobina Nketiah V, said Ghana has retrogressed and needed to be revived.
“Help us to wake again. We have been asleep since independence,” he told the former president.
