The leader of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has responded to remarks made recently by the leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, his political adversary.
Mr. Mahama emphasized that experienced leadership—rather than a leader with no prior presidential experience—is what Ghana needs to overcome its obstacles.
Dr. Bawumia recently made the point in a media engagement that, in contrast to Mr. Mahama, he had never held the office of President, implying that voters need to give him a chance to try something different.
Speaking at a community gathering as part of his regional campaign in Greater Accra, Mr. Mahama responded by brushing off Dr. Bawumia’s comments and accusing the NPP of attempting to draw attention away from the NDC’s recently released manifesto.
In his media appearances, Dr. Bawumia made remarks that Mr. Mahama criticized, referring to them as a “failed attempt” to divert Ghanaians’ attention away from the NDC’s policy platform.
“Our youth do not have the luxury of time,” Mr. Mahama said, stressing the need for seasoned leadership. “Because our youth are the future and they are also present.
“They don’t have the luxury of trial and error—this one will come and try, dump us in the ditch, and the driver’s mate will come and take it and try again, and crash us even further into the ditch.”
Highlighting his own experience, Mr. Mahama continued: “We need experience, we need someone who has done it before. We need a licensed driver to take over the vehicle and move the vehicle to where God has destined.”
