Who Wins Elections Has Nothing To Do With The EC Chair- Obeng-Fosu Baba Tauffic

Former Public Relations Officer for the Ministry of Energy, Kwasi Obeng-Fosu, popularly known as Homeboy Baba Tauffic, has revealed that history has proven that who is elected the president of our country has nothing to do with the sitting Electoral Commission Chair.

Baba Tauffic expressed his surprise as to why people are still investing time and energy into debating who should chair the Electoral Commission (EC) in Ghana.

He explained that the EC, as a state institution, has the responsibility of executing its core duties fairly and firmly and that it should not allow political parties to dictate to it.

According to Baba Tauffic, “It’s becoming increasingly evident that regardless of who chairs the EC, the results from the polling stations will ultimately prevail, and also stressed that Ghana’s democracy has matured, and past elections have demonstrated that the perceived bias towards a particular party doesn’t guarantee their victory.”

He further reiterated that,” history from our recent elections has clearly supported the fact that the party perceived to be favored by the EC often loses, and the will of the people compels the EC to declare the opposition winner.”

“Given this, it’s pointless to waste time and energy on who chairs the EC. Whether the NDC retains or replaces the current EC chair won’t impact future election outcomes. It’s time to focus on more pressing issues and channel our energy into constructive endeavors.”

“For instance, Madam Charlotte Osei, who was appointed during the NDC’s tenure, couldn’t secure their re-election despite their strong support for her. Similarly, the NPP, after winning under her supervision, had her replaced by Madam Jean Mensah, who subsequently declared opposition leader John Mahama as the winner of the recent presidential election after so much noise and suspicion from the NDC,” he added.

He, however disregarded suggestions of the EC manipulating the elections for one political party, noting that pulling off such a scheme is impossible as has been proven by our recent elections, specifically the 2016 and 2024.

He believes that with the level of vigilance and the technological preparations being employed by the various political parties, the media and other observers, it has become very difficult for any EC Chair to rig the elections at the strong room since several media platforms are used to collate the provisional results directly from the polling stations as and when they are counted and declared.
