Member of Parliament for the Sefwi-Wiawso Constituency in the Western Region Dr. Kwaku Afriyie has publicly rejected an apology from Majority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh on his behalf. Speaker Alban Bagbin had expelled Afriyie from the chamber due to a disagreement over the president’s appointment of two Supreme Court judges.
Speaker Bagbin had urged the House to take into account the Appointments Committee’s report in the larger context of the Supreme Court’s complete complement.
Dr. Afriyie expressed his disapproval of the Speaker’s remarks, claiming that Bagbin lacked the right to make such claims.
Speaker Bagbin dismissed Dr. Afriyie from the House due to this disagreement, calling his statements “rude” and “disrespectful.”
Majority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh apologized on behalf of the caucus to the Speaker in response.
In an interview with Citi FM in Accra, Dr. Afriyie, however, refuted any wrongdoing and made it clear that he had not given Mr. Annoh-Dompreh permission to apologize on his behalf.
“He apologised on my behalf? Well, he doesn’t have my permission to do that, and this one you can put on record.
“We’ll take it everywhere. I haven’t done anything wrong, so why should I apologise? I haven’t insulted the Speaker, I haven’t disrespected him. Where’s the disrespect?” he questioned.
Dr. Afriyie maintained that his remarks were neither derogatory nor offensive and that an apology was not necessary.
