ZEBILLA: RESIDENTS BESIEGE POLICE STATION IN DEMAND FOR A VICTIM WHO ALLEGEDLY STOLE A CHILD

The residents of Zebilla in the Upper East Region have besieged the district police station of the area after a woman who allegedly stole a baby at the district hospital was arrested and handed over to the police.

Family of the baby narrates that, the victim visited the maternity unit of the hospital and established relationship with the stolen child’s mother. After sometime, the mother of the child decided to take a bath and handed the child to the victim. The victim then took the child away and went into hiding in a different town. Announcements were made on local radio stations and she was later apprehended the following day by community members and handed over to the police.

The family of stolen baby upon receiving the news of the arrest besieged the police station in demand for the victim.

The father of the stolen child narrates that, he was beaten by the police for attempting to have a glimpse of the victim. Other residents however accused the police of impunity in the area and mentioned the lack of confidence in the police.

This sparked another tension, plugging residents from near and far to besiege the police station. Reinforcement team was deployed in order to manage the situation.

Medical superintendent for the Zebilla district hospital Dr Ayobi Abdul Rahman stated that, the incident is first time in the facility and it served as a wake up call for them to strengthen their vigilance and surveillance in the facility.
