Workers of the State Transport Corporation (STC) are protesting the appointment of a third deputy managing director, describing it as a waste of public funds.
In a petition to the Board Chairman, the workers argued that the two existing deputies are sufficient and that the corporation should prioritize acquiring more buses and settling outstanding pensions.
The workers noted that the company has operated without a deputy managing director for a considerable period, indicating that the reduction in deputy managing directors would not adversely affect operations.
They highlighted the challenges facing the company, including a dwindling fleet of operational buses, with only 39 out of 145 buses being roadworthy. The workers attributed this to the poor quality of buses acquired in 2020, resulting in frequent repairs and maintenance issues.
Furthermore, they drew attention to outstanding provident fund contributions and statutory deductions, including six years of provident fund arrears, six months of Tier 2 arrears, and SSNIT deductions exceeding six million Ghana Cedis.
The unionized staff have vowed to continue barricading the office of the Deputy Managing Director until the appointment is revoked.
