Speaking at the case study research on women’s participation in extractive governance on January 25, 2024, in Accra, Mr. Aryee emphasized the importance of empowering women in mining to foster inclusivity and diversity.
Dr. Georgette Barnes Sakyi-Addo, President of Women in Mining Ghana, adds in her opening statement that, in collaboration with the Ford Foundation, Women In Mining (WIM) Ghana conducted a Gender Mapping Research in the Eastern and Western Region. The research aimed to identify gender imbalances within the mining sector and proposed solutions for informed advocacy and the development of strategies promoting gender inclusion.
She outlines the key objectives of women in the mining industry, including advocating for women in the extractives sector, coordinating activities across the value chain in the country and beyond.
Subsequently, Mr. Samuel Osei Bekoe of the Centre for Extractives and Development, Africa (CEDA), presented a case study report on barriers and limitations in governance affecting women’s participation. He highlights global statistics, with Ghana at 9%, Brazil at 12%, and South Africa at 13% in women’s participation, noting the need for improvement.
The workshop is anticipated to delve into discussions on empowering women in mining, the importance of standardization, and other pertinent issues.
